Ending the month of "geek"

So it has been a fairly busy month for me. I am writing this a little early as I expect to be busy with none tech stuff this week.

The month of “geek” is nearly over. That is the month where I just investigated whatever I wanted. I think it was a response to have kept myself quite focused the past few months.

In the last post I mentioned I would be setting up a few scripts to automate as much as possible in my day to day computer usage at home. This actually only took a couple of evenings and do I wish I had done it before. Certainly paying dividends.

The other task I wanted to do was take a look at Rust. I love learning programming language and was slightly worried I might loose the project based focus I am trying to build.

My limited knowledge of rust also indicated that it might actually be a good tool to use for coding projects. It seemed to be ticking all the boxes.

I wrote my first medium article about it here. About a week ago I decided to not use it for the next project and actually started throwing around some C++ code and playing with some ideas.

A fews days after that I decided to try and generate my own bindings for SDL2 and found it really easy to do, previously I has been wrapping it with a really simple c interface. Given the low version number of many Rust libraries I want as much control as reasonable just so I don’t rely on something that might stop getting updates.

This made me reconsider the decision to not use rust. Given I expect the project to take between 4-6 months and will probably target the web I figured why not. Really the main goal is to push on my art and probably learn Krita.

If it turns out I find Rust not quite right I can quickly re-implement in C++.
