New Year

Is there a better way to see in the new year than a really heavy cold that has you floored. Perhaps there is but the heavy cold options was the one dealt to me.

Christmas resulted in a number of Hudl 2 tablets entering the house. They are pretty nice tablets that may be unique to the UK as they are produced by Tesco (a large supermarket chain in the UK).

One fun thing about them was on the play store the game Terraria did not support these tablets. My children quite like this game. Looking on the Amazon store not only do I find it is happy to install it on the tablets but was for a limited period free. Kind of a win for amazon and a loss for google play as we now have the amazon app store installed and am now only one step from buying from them.

Christmas also brought in the first chromebook into our house. It is an ARM based one and is really nice to use. I have not put it to any heavy duty tasks but it handles all the light browser based tasks like blogging, emails and facebook with ease. The battery life is great at around 13 hours. I will probably try some light JavaScript coding on it just to see how it handles it.

With the new year I usually set out some goals of what I would like to learn/create over the coming year but to be honest I with a heavy cold I just have not got round to thinking much about that yet.

Fast iteration

It is fair to say I am pretty obsessed with fast iteration cycles at the moment. It was a motivating reason I relooked at coding in C. I found I enjoyed coding in C but sometimes miss the algorithms that exist in C++’s STL.  It really depends on the task. What I realise I had not thought about much is getting fast iteration speeds by leaving behind system levels languages. Using something like Java, Kotlin or  C#. All compile pretty quickly and I  get some superb tooling with them. Of course it means leaving behind memory efficient data structures.   For some projects this would be not a bad idea. I have had the urge to create a few small games and started to write one in C++. It only occurred to me tonight every time I do this I fail.  The only times I  have successfully release anything to the public I have been using  Java. Weird but true. I should also blog more :)

September 2018 Start of Geek Month

September always seem to be my so called geek month for me. August is usually pretty busy so September is a good time to get back into computers. So far this month I have taken the time to learn a little bit more about CMake. That is actually read some tutorials and updated my knowledge to a more modern version of it. I have renewed my knowledge on building things with emscripten and then started to combine the two to start to create a simple little game library in C++. Only a few hundred lines so far but progressing. An of course I have written this blog post. I have not written a blog post for such a long time. On the list this month is getting opengl/webgl working with the game engine and a few other small things on the TODO list. After that I am not sure, I think I make take a look at the programming language Zig as it has been on my watch list for a while. I have spent a bit of time with Rust this year and enjoyed some parts of it but am happy to wait a little longer for the Eco s

Quick(ish) Sweet Potato and Tuna Steak

Until this week I had never cooked a tuna steak. Occasionally I had them in a restaurant but never at home. While out shopping I noticed in the frozen fish section they were priced at a reasonable price. Ok it was Asda and they were £3 for four. I thought this is a good price to experiment with them. I admit I had fairly low expectations.  The image above shows what I managed to throw together in about 20 minutes. While lots of recipes marinade the tuna or add a sauce I decided that for my first go it should be simple. I am sorry but when I am experimenting I forget to weigh things but here is the recipe. Ingredients A frozen Tuna Steak. A medium size sweet potato. A handful of french beans (I used frozen). Seasoning and oil. A big handful of salad. Peal the sweet potato and slice into thin circular sections as per the picture. Place the oil in a large pan and heat then add the sweet potato.
